Out door tort pen update

So I have planted the seeds from carlolina pet supply and they came up beatutifully. Only took a couple of days for them to start sprouting. The only problem was my tort didn't seem too interested in eating them. I think he got used to only eating what I put in his food bowel and he forgot he is suppose to graze for himself. It might also have to do with the fact that the weather is getting a little cooler and there is not enough sun. However, if I pick the plants and then put them on his dish he will eat them. Go figure...

Cactus Hunters

So I decided since I am now living in San Diego and it is a desert with cacti I should probably just go out and grab some for the tort instead of buying it online. About 3 days ago my girlfriend and I went out at about 11 o'clock at night and walked a few blocks down to where I thought I remembered seeing some pickly pears. Sure enough it was right there, I just had to climb up a hill with my flashlight and break a few pads off. After a few thorns in my hand we walked away with two pads. I started feeding one of the to my tortoise (he loves the cactus now) and the other one I tried replanting in a pot. Ill let you all know how that goes.

Also our whole property was sprayed with insecticide so now I have to hose down his pen and keep him inside for a week or too.

New Tortoise Home in San Diego

Well my tortoise now has a brand new outdoor pen in San Diego. I think he is still getting used to it but seems to like it more and more each day. I put a medium size terracotta pot bottom on one side so he can soak or drink if he wants to. I just wish is got alittle more sunlight so I could leave him in there longer ant not have to keep him inside as much. I ordered some grazing seeds from carolinapetsupply.com to plant in his pen so I dont need to buy him food. I plan on going hunting for cactus too when I have time.

Now in San Diego with the Tortoise

Well after a long 8 hour car ride loaded down with a trailer I made it to San Diego along with the tort. He rode in the back the whole way burried in his hay. I think all the bumping around and shaking scared him. I was planning on holding him for most of the way but since he never came out I figured it was not worth the hassel. I just bought some food for him at the store and plan on ording some catus and tort seed from Carolina Pet Supply. I also bought some wood and nails to build him a new outdoor pen as well as a bigger inside cage I found at Ikea. So much to do to settle in but currently he is on top of the dresser with a nice view of the pool. I'll try to keep up with the updates and post some pic's of new arrangements.

Moving down to San Diego

Well it's that time of year again... time to go back to school. Im starting to pack up including all the tort supplies. I think I can get him down there without too much hassel and I'm hopinf the trip wont be too hard on him. I just hope I am able to find a nice place for his outdoor pen as the outdoor space in going to be much more limited. Ill keep you guys posted on how moving goes but it's going to be a busy next few days.

First Cage Cleaning

I finally cleaned the tortoise cage for the first time. It was starting to smell like urine and poop and my mom couldnt take it anymore. I did the same thing as last time. 50/50 mixture of sand and Bed-A-Beast about 2 inches thick. Except this time I got good sand from Home Depot. This time I am going to remove the poop as he does it inside the cage so it will last longer. He mostly poops outside anyways so its not that big of a deal. I will also include a good stack of hay and the same piece of bark that was in there before.
